Choosing a Vision Measuring System: What to Check Before You Buy (7 อ่าน)
9 ต.ค. 2569 12:32

Hi everyone,

I work with Sipcon, and I’m sharing some practical notes on vision measuring systems because the same questions come up often in QC and metrology discussions. I’d like to hear how others are using them too.

What is a Vision Measuring System?

A vision measuring system is a non-contact measurement machine. A high-resolution camera, optical lens, and lighting capture an image of the part, and software measures dimensions, angles, diameters, and positions from that image. Since nothing touches the part, it suits small, delicate, or soft components that a probe could deform.

Where is it commonly used?

PCB and electronics manufacturing

Plastic and rubber parts

Precision stampings and machined components

Medical device parts

Connectors, watch parts, and other micro-components

What to check before choosing one

Measuring range (X, Y, Z): Choose based on your largest part, with some margin.

Accuracy and resolution: Ask how the stated accuracy is verified, not just the number.

Optics and lighting: Surface and backlight options matter for reflective or dark parts.

Software: Look for auto-edge detection, CAD import, reporting, and easy program editing.

Manual, semi-auto, or fully automatic: Match it to your inspection volume.

Calibration and support: Confirm calibration certificates, training, and service availability.

Vision Measuring System vs. CMM

A vision system is faster for 2D features and small parts with no contact force. A CMM is better for deep 3D features and large, heavy parts. Many labs use both.

Common mistakes

Buying on price without checking real repeatability

Ignoring the lighting setup

Skipping operator training

Not planning regular calibration

Disclosure: I’m associated with Sipcon, which makes measuring and inspection equipment. I’m happy to answer general questions about vision measuring systems here, whether or not they relate to our products.

Question for the community: What parts are you measuring with your vision measuring system, and what accuracy or software problems have you run into?
