Framing a thangka: wooden frame or traditional brocade mounting? (16 อ่าน)

Since this board is about wood work, a question I see a lot: how should a thangka painting be framed?
The traditional way is a silk brocade mounting with a wooden rod at the top and bottom, so the painting can be rolled for travel or storage. It looks right in a shrine room and lets the canvas breathe. A wooden frame works well too if you want it on a living room wall. Just keep a small gap between the glass and the painting, use acid-free backing, and choose plain dark or natural wood so it does not fight with the gold details.
Avoid gluing the canvas to a board, because that can crack the mineral paint over time. If you are still choosing a piece to frame, Buy authentic thangka painting is a good place to see sizes and whether a painting comes unmounted or already in brocade.
